Having been discontinued for 4 years due to strategic shifts within the organization, the historic Student Pipeline Development initiative, which had been at the heart of SAADP’s efforts since its inception in the early 2000s, was brought back to life. This occurred following the organisation’s new brand identity relaunch in May 2024.
During the SAADP relaunch, Mr Nthato Selebi, the SAADP Executive Director, announced the revival of this initiative, highlighting the significance of Actuarial Science awareness and promotion at school level.
Attracting black learners to the Actuarial Science career has long been SAADPs challenge over the years. Therefore, SAADP is determined to overcome this challenge through collaborations with its own Alumni, the like-minded organisations such as the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), the Department of Basic Education, Sci-Bono Discovery Centre, and several other NPOs.
“We realize how critical it is to increase Actuarial Science awareness at school level and highlight the career opportunities that exist within this vital sector.” said the Executive Director; Mr. Nthato Selebi.
These collaborations have already yielded remarkable results, with over 16,000 learners from across the country being introduced to the world of Actuarial Science in just the first semester of 2024. These learners drawn from different township and rural schools are among the top achievers in Mathematics, giving them a strong foundation to excel in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers.
The Student Pipeline Development Initiative is geared towards two audiences: high school learners who are passionate about STEM subjects and current black actuarial students who are not yet part of SAADP. Through SAADP’s renewed efforts, thousands of black learners now stand at the doorstep of a brighter, more equitable actuarial future
“It is our objective that all our communication platforms including the website and social media platforms, not only tell our brand story, but educate, inspire, and empower young black South Africans to explore an actuarial career. We remain ambitious about creating a sustainable and diverse talent pipeline for South Africa’s actuarial sector – a pipeline that reflects the diversity of our nation.” said the Programme Development Manager, Mr. Mtho Gumede.
The success of the relaunch of the Pipeline Development Initiative has also captured the attention and support of the broader education community. Schools, NPOs in education and more; are embracing the initiative as a vital step towards empowering a new generation of actuaries who will shape the future of South Africa.
SAADP’s collaboration with its own Alumni and other entities has demonstrated that, through unity and shared vision, we can break down barriers and create opportunities for black learners who may never have imagined a career in Actuarial Science. We are therefore committed to expanding our reach and providing resources and opportunities to every black child who dreams of becoming an actuary.
