SAADP and Deloitte Ignite Young Minds through Actuarial Job Shadowing Experience

Midrand, Johannesburg – 27 March 2025 – Four aspiring young actuaries from local high schools had a unique opportunity to step into the dynamic world of actuarial science, thanks to Deloitte and the South African Actuarial Development Programme (SAADP). This exciting Job Shadowing programme, part of SAADP’s Actuarial Pipeline Development Initiatives, aims to expose Grade 11 and 12 learners to real-world applications of mathematics and risk analysis within leading actuarial firms.

The four learners – Tshegofatso Khawula and Ofentse Khawula both from Curro Edenvale, Kamogelo Maedi from La Salle College, and Khanimamba Makhubele from Atlas Combined School – spent a day at Deloitte’s Midrand offices, where they engaged with actuarial professionals, explored cutting-edge financial modeling techniques, and gained first-hand insights into the diverse career pathways within the profession. This immersive experience was designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry expectations, offering the learners a taste of the problem-solving and analytical skills required in this challenging yet rewarding field.

“At Deloitte, we are committed to fostering future talent, and partnering with SAADP for this initiative aligns with our vision of nurturing the next generation of actuarial professionals,” said Nhlanhla Mkhabela, Deloitte’s Actuarial Analyst and SAADP Alumnus. “It was inspiring to see these young learners engage with industry experts and gain valuable insights into what it takes to excel in this profession.”

SAADP’s Job Shadowing Initiative is made possible through the voluntary participation of leading actuarial firms that open their doors to young learners. These corporates play a critical role in developing South Africa’s actuarial talent pool by providing mentorship, exposure, and hands-on learning opportunities. By investing in initiatives like this, companies contribute not only to individual career growth but also to the long-term sustainability of the actuarial profession in the country.

“We are incredibly grateful to Deloitte for hosting these learners and for their commitment to empowering the next generation,” said Mthokozisi Gumede, SAADP’s Programme Development Manager. “Opportunities like these inspire young talent to pursue actuarial careers with confidence and determination. We encourage more corporates to partner with us in shaping South Africa’s future actuaries.”

As SAADP continues to expand its Actuarial Pipeline Development Initiatives, corporate partnerships remain crucial in unlocking opportunities for academically talented yet underrepresented learners. The success of this Deloitte Job Shadowing experience underscores the profound impact that industry collaboration can have on developing the actuarial professionals of tomorrow.

Corporates interested in supporting SAADP’s Job Shadowing Programme and other actuarial development initiatives are encouraged to get involved. Together, we can shape a future where South Africa remains a hub for actuarial excellence and innovation.
