On 20 September 2024, the South African Actuarial Development Programme (SAADP) held an Actuarial Science Students Award Ceremony at the Villa Africa Boutique Hotel in Pretoria. The event was organised to celebrate the academic achievements of some of the brightest young minds in the field of actuarial science, as well as their dedication to advancing South Africa’s financial and insurance sectors.
Among the notable attendees were SAADP board members, sponsors, and representatives from financial institutions that have consistently supported the programme.
SAADP, founded in 2003, has become a cornerstone in the development of actuarial talent in South Africa. The programme provides financial, academic, and psychosocial support to black students, helping them pursue an actuarial qualification at the top universities. Many graduates of the programme have gone on to hold significant positions in the actuarial space, both locally and globally.
Speaking at the ceremony, SAADP Board Chairperson, Mrs S’onqoba Vuba, emphasized the critical role actuaries play in shaping South Africa’s financial future. “Our students are the future of this country’s financial stability. We are proud to celebrate their hard work and determination as they continue to overcome the challenges in this scarce but demanding field,” she said.
The main highlight of the evening was the awards presentation, which recognized students for their outstanding academic performance, leadership, and commitment to the profession. Several top-performing students from various universities, including the University of Pretoria, the University of Cape Town, and the University of the Witwatersrand, were honoured.
The SAADP’s Executive Director, Mr. Nthato Selebi, welcomed the attendees by acknowledging the ongoing support of sponsors, who continue to invest in the next generation of actuaries. “This ceremony is a testament to the work we do in nurturing and supporting students who will go on to become leaders in their specialization fields. We are committed to ensuring that actuarial expertise grows in South Africa, by fostering diversity in the profession.”
The Ceremony not only celebrated academic excellence but also emphasized the importance of continuing to support the development of young actuarial minds in shaping South Africa’s economic future.
