Our mandate
That said, the road for many Black learners who want to study Actuarial Science still appears to be shaped by long-standing inequalities – uneven schooling, limited exposure to the profession, in many cases, a lack of the financial as well as academic support needed to stay the course. It’s partly because of these realities that SAADP remains determined to accelerate transformation and bring partners together who share the belief that a more inclusive sector is not only possible, but necessary.
Over time, SAADP has built a network of alumni who all contribute in different ways to supporting current students. The bursary is often the first point of entry, but students will tell you that what really carries them through is the mix of academic support, mentorship, and honest career guidance they receive along the way. This combination has helped shape graduates who are not only financially supported but also equipped – emotionally, academically, and professionally – to step confidently into the industry.
And the results are starting to show. Hundreds of SAADP alumni are now working in insurance companies, banks, consulting firms, as well as other parts of the financial sector. Quite a few still find time to mentor current students, which suggests that the idea of “giving back” isn’t just language in a brochure but something that continues to take root. Their journeys offer a quiet but powerful reminder that when young people are given real opportunities, the impact tends to ripple far beyond the initial investment.
Looking ahead, SAADP is likely to keep stretching itself – exploring new ways to reach learners, experimenting with digital tools, and strengthening partnerships with organisations that share this long-term vision. The hope is to open the door even wider for talented young South Africans who might otherwise never discover or pursue this profession. In many ways, the programme is working toward a future where representation, excellence, and inclusion aren’t framed as goals to chase, but simply part of what the actuarial landscape in South Africa looks like.
